Cortegana is a village situated in Sierra Morena, within the Natural Park of Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche in the north mountains of the Huelva region, with its frontiers to the South of Badajoz and the West of Seville region.

The same distance of approximately 115Km separates this village from its neighbouring regions´ capitals (Seville, Huelva and Badajoz). Until very recently, the conditions of the roads had always kept this area quite isolated, leaving the way of life and ecosystems in this area fairly untouched.

Ecology

Its landscapes, typically Mediterranean, are a beautiful sign of the equilibrium among humans and nature, where the forest originally of Holm-oaks and cork oak trees have been cleaned and prepared for livestock to make a better use of the existing pasture and acorns, occupying the majority of the area. In the proximities of villages, humans have replaced this kind of forest for olive trees plantations and vegetable gardens and in the highest areas of the mountains for chestnut trees.

The weather and the relief of these mountains form an intricate hydrographical network, formed by many river banks, streams and ravines, in which limits grows vegetation, like willows, ash trees, poplars and black poplar which together with the chestnut and fruit trees, adorn the landscape during the autumn. Many different birds cheer up the atmosphere with their singing in the mornings. Flocks of birds cross the skies in spring and autumn, in their two-way journey. The black vultures, very typical in the area, can be seen very often. The night birds of prey fill the silence of the starry nights in these mountains.

The hunting in this area is of mainly young wild boars and deer.

There are many animals, small hunters that hunt during the night like shreds, ferrets and weasels.

Livestock

This region lives mainly off the livestock industry. The breeding of the Iberic Pig fed with acorns during the winter, is a very typical sight in its landscape. The goats, sheep and cows are the basics of the livestock industry in this region of the mountains of Huelva.

Economy

The villages in the mountains of this region live off the animal livestock, chestnuts, cork oaks industries but the main income comes from the abattoirs and the production of pork butcher's products from the Iberic pork, where jamón is internationally known for its quality and exquisite taste.

The art crafts in this area are based on cork products, potery, roman scales and horse rising products.
